The Superintendency of Electricity is the regulatory entity of the Dominican electricity sub-sector and is responsible for overseeing and supervising compliance with the laws, regulations and technical standards applicable to the sub-sector, in relation to the development of the activities of generation, transmission, distribution and commercialization of electricity, and is also responsible for establishing the tariffs and tolls subject to price regulation.

The Superintendency of Electricity was created by General Electricity Law (LGE) No. 125-01, enacted on July 26, 2001, as a decentralized institution of the Dominican State with legal personality under public law, its own assets and capacity to acquire assets, exercise rights and contract obligations, under the provisions of Article 8 of the aforementioned Law.
